Terry was fantastic and taught us all the skills we needed (handling the sheets, helming, navigating, anchoring, etc). He was also very patient and made sure we understood what he was saying before continuing. By the time we finished our lessons, we couldn't wait to start our bareboating adventure! A fabulous refresher course and pre-charter team building session The four of us recently completed the pre-charter course with Terry over 2 days. He is a very competent trainer with an extremely easy manner and is a pleasure to be around. The way that he explains things, is very logical and easy to understand and he does not rush. He also talks very visually which makes it simple to remember things. The pre-charter course initially covers safety on board, the basics of using the winches and trimming the sails, which really put us all at ease, as we all have different abilities and experience, and none of us had sailed together before. We then moved on to mooring, dropping the anchor, and making sure that the boat is secure in the event of high winds or overnight. He even threw in 1 hour charting and mapping which we had only touched on before for free. Over the 2 days we learnt to work together as a team, and were all allocated default positions around the boat, so we all knew where we were going to be working and where to jump to when we needing to manoeuvre.Terry’s boat was stunning and impeccably looked after, we felt like we were in luxury even though we were not sleeping on board. Next time Terry!We would not hesitate to recommend Terry to anyone either wanting to learn to sail, have a refresh or for the pre-charter course and will be using him in the future for a fun sail up to Jumping Pin. Brilliant The 3 of us had limited sailing experience but after Terrys course we all felt reasonably confident. I have never sailed before and found Terrys training AMAZING, i left feeling confident enough to go on our trip, and may even do a refresher just before we leave. As a family we are about to bareboat around the Whitsundays with zero sailing experience. natalie houghton3 August 2019Testimonial - sail gold coast As we are planning an overseas trip bare boating on a yacht, we thought it may help to at least learn the basics of sailing, even though we planned to motor. Not anymore, our motor is now just in case there is no wind !Terry the skipper showed us the ropes so to speak as well as handling the sails, tacking & safe anchoring on his 28ft yacht and we all as a family, with 3 kids under 12, had a job to do - and honestly we absolutely loved it ! Terry was informative and patient and this is what put us all at ease.Even my 10 year old daughter who didnt even want to get on the boat in the first place was a gun at trimming the sails and we all cant wait to set sail again.We are doing a refresher session with Terry just before we head off on our trip and are really looking forward to it. Thorsten F22 November 2016Fantastic, highly recommended Celebrate by Sail offer various experience options for adults and families, so a sail across the Broadwater was perfect for our 8 & 10 year old daughters for their first sailing experience. Terry encouraged us all to have a go, and somehow didn't panic as my wife took the boat on a wild ride, scaring (and scarring) the kids. I can't think of a better way to dip the toes than to jump onboard with Terry. I was taken through boat safety, winch operation, helming, heeling, furling, trimming and all the other things that make sailing such a fun sport. From the booking through the end of the sail, our experience was amazing. In the days leading up to the sail, our skipper Terry was in constant communication - planning our itinerary, making suggestions in terms of food, adapting his spotify account to accommodate our playlist, etc. We were lucky to have great weather and all in a moving experience. My mother is keen to it all again.. you were a very good teacher, and she might take you up on your job offer! I think she got the hang of the helm quite quickly ! Young Maddie soon lost her fear of going out on the water and the anticipation of sea sickness !! It was such a lovely smooth ride, so I'm sure she'll do it again ! All three of us wanted a slightly different experience and Terry did a great job to accommodate all our needs. We all loved it! He is a wonderful skipper and instructor and delivered a well balanced afternoon of fun, theory, the right amount of hands on practice and relaxation. I would recommend contacting Terry for any level of sailing experience from a sunset cruise to a intensive boot camp which will prep you for sailing on your own. His yacht is just the right size for 3 or 4 people and it is spotless and at the time of sailing had brand new sails. Terry's passion for sailing is contagious. Terry was fantastic at introducing us to our first sailing experience. The time spent showing us the "ropes" and workings of Stella Maris II before leaving the marina was so informative and hands-on that by the time we hit the broadwater our confidence level had grown and given us the ability to control the majority of the remainder of the sailing trip! Happy21 June 2014Terry's "Sailworld" - great learning experience We wanted a break from the Seaworld, Dreamworld and Movieworld theme parks so we found "Celebrate by Sail" on trip advisor. My husband and I had always talked about taking a sailing course with our teenage boys, because we love being outdoors and on the water, so this was a great thing to do on holiday.Terry was very patient and gave very good instructions to us in the span of three hours. He was also good at giving each kid individual tasks and giving them reasons for why it should be done this way. I also liked his teaching method of "making mistakes to learn from them." Of course, safety was always a priority and I was especially pleased that we discussed that up front, so we didn't "ding" the boat - or worse! We learned the boat vocabulary, how to steer, tack, unfurl the sails and basic knot tying. Skye H12 March 2014Magnificent Sailing Day - Holiday Highlight I arranged a day sailing with SailGoldCoast/Celebrate by Sail as a Christmas present for my husband. It was the most fantastic day. We were able to to take our two young boys and my sister and her husband. Terry is an expert sailor, a charming host who reads people very well and a gentleman. His lovely boat is equipped with all the little things that create a relaxed sense of style and afford comfort - he had thought of everything. Because of the tide times, we headed out quite early in the morning, arrived at Jumpinpin Bar for a swim and picnic lunch timed perfectly so that the current was not too strong and the water was clear blue. We finished our day with an exciting sail up wind, with all of us pitching in.This charter was great value and Terry made sure that the balance of learning some new skills and just relaxing and enjoying the boat and the environment was just right. Not only did I enjoy the day immensely, I took great pleasure in how much my husband enjoyed his gift and being able to host other members of the family. All complimented me on choosing Terry to take us (Thank you to those who submitted reviews for helping me get that right!).During our holiday we stayed in beach front apartments at Snapper Rocks and Seaworld where we did all the theme parks but our day sailing with Terry was definitely the highlight of our trip. We will definitely be back for more sailing. We feel like we've found someone who can expertly help us develop our sailing skills and who is a delight to be around.Posted on TripadvisorPeripidous9 January 2014Excellent training, very enjoyable, good value My wife and I are thinking of hiring a bareboat and sailing around the Whitsundays, however we have next to no sailing experience and didn't want to join a sailing club to learn. We were looking for a taste of what it would be like, and so went out with Terry for a few hours. My parents came along for the ride too. It was exactly what we were after!Terry gave us a crash course in the basics and within no time we were tacking up the seaway. I can't believe how much fun it was, and how much we enjoyed the afternoon. We will be going back to Terry for another session or two to learn a bit more before our sailing adventure. I would highly recommend this company. Tom B29 December 2013Perfect Friday with girlfriends Dear Terry! We just want to pass on our THANKS for an amazing afternoon on your yacht last Friday. The weather condition were on our side. Could not ask for a more perfect evening and watching the sun set on the water was spectacular. 2 hours cruising was peaceful and fun and a perfect way to unwind and have fun with girls . Not to mention the seafood, champagne company and your excellent navigation. Murray and I wanted to go out and have a go at sailing to see if we liked it before we booked a holiday or a weekend break on a yacht and this was the perfect way to do it. We have been on boats/yachts before but never in the position of actually sailing and being responsible for the vessel. Terry had the ability to teach us what we needed to know to ensure we felt like we were the sailors and Terry was there to help us! He made us feel comfortable on the yacht from the second we were there. Everything was covered from how to get on the boat "like a yachtie" to harder things like tacking. He also have us lots of tips and tricks we will find extremely useful. We left the day feeling like we were now comfortable for our Whitsunday yacht honeymoon.
